Virgo How did the constellations get their names? Most constellation names are Latin in origin, dating from the Roman empire, but their meanings often originated in the distant past of human civilization. Scorpius, for instance, was given its name from the Latin word for scorpion, but ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs from before B. Orion, the hunter, bears a Greek name, but had been seen as a hunter-hero figure since the times of ancient Babylon. Of course, many of the constellation names are more modern — Telescopium, the telescope, being a rather obvious newcomer. In fact, by the 19th century the night sky had become crowded with overlapping and often contradictory constellation boundaries and names as different schools of astronomy prepared their own versions of star maps. To clear up the confusion, names and boundaries were “officially” assigned to 88 constellations by the International Astronomical Union in , providing complete coverage of the entire sky.

Archaeological sites containing faunal remains of early domesticates are extremely rare and only a few sites yielding these have been excavated in Yemen and along the eastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula. Neolithisation models have therefore had to infer population dynamics and subsistence changes across vast distances. Here we present the first report of a newly discovered Neolithic site in the Jubbah oasis, on the southern edge of the Nefud desert.
The site is located on the margin of palaeolake deposits and consists of a large cluster of at least visible hearths. Abundant lithics consisted of both ground and chipped stone artefacts, some of which recall the Pottery Neolithic in the Levant. Some 15 fragments of Bos dentition were also recovered. The age of the site raises the distinct possibility that the faunal remains represent domestic cattle.
The nature of the site, with evidence for repeated occupation, may therefore indicate seasonal use by pastoralists. The site of Jebel Oraf 2 promises to fill a major geographic gap in our understanding of the Neolithisation process in Arabia.
Some paleoanthropologists lump Paranthropus robustus and other paranthropoids into the genus Australopithecus. They consider them to be a physically robust subgroup of australopithecines. Following that excavation, he dedicated the rest of his life to writing everything known about all of the early hominins. He completed this compendium work in He was 85 years old and ill.

Since the s El Castillo has been studied through a detailed analysis of Obermaier’s original excavation notes, the cleaning and study of the extant section, and the excavation of material in the shelter entrance. Radiocarbon dating of charcoal from the modern s onwards excavation suggested that unit 18, corresponding to Aurignacian Delta of the s excavation, was significantly earlier than other Aurignacian assemblages in western Europe.
Combined with a reanalysis of the lithic and osseous industry, these dates led to the suggestion that material in unit 18 and Aurignacian Delta was a transitional industry, showing a gradual transformation of the Mousterian into the Upper Palaeolithic. The conclusion has profound implications for understanding the appearance of the Upper Palaeolithic in western Europe. However, the theory has been heavily debated, with criticism focusing on the analysis of the lithic and bone assemblage as well as the chronology.
We focus on the latter, and assess whether the original dates were accurate, whether they were well associated with the archaeology, and whether there was vertical and lateral variation in the age of the assemblages within unit 18 and Aurignacian Delta. In contrast, in the old excavation area, Aurignacian Delta does include material of a younger age.
This suggests that discussion of the Transitional Aurignacian can only include material from unit 18, in the new area of excavation. Previous article in issue.
The storm is already blanketing parts of the Northeast, and has 22 states under snow and flood alerts. Airport delays are possible in a number of cities, including Dallas, Memphis and Boston. Denver and parts of the Midwest received several inches of snow on Thursday, which caused trouble for road travelers when highways became slicked with ice.
Similar conditions are also expected in the Northeast by Friday afternoon, forecasters said.

Home Pagan Origins Christian Beginnings Today’s Christmas Trees Controversy Pagan Origins Dating back centuries before Christ, cultures brought evergreen trees, plants, and leaves into their homes upon the arrival of the winter solstice, which occurs in the northern hemisphere between December 21st and 22nd. Although the specific practices were different in each country and culture, the symbolization was generally the same: Egyptians particularly valued evergreens as a symbol of life’s victory over death.
They brought green date palm leaves into their homes around the time of the winter solstice. Romans had a public festival called Saturnalia, which lasted one week beginning on December 17th, and included a variety of celebrations around the winter solstice. Curiously, the Roman winter solstice was marked on December 25th on the Julian calendar. These celebrations are thought to have merged with pagan practices of hanging mistletoe and the burning of the Yule log. In Britain, the Yule log was originally seen as a magical amulet, and eventually made it into the hand’s of Father Christmas.
In Italy the Yule log is still burned for the “Festa di Ceppo”. In Catalonia, the log is wrapped in a blanket until Christmas Eve, when it’s unwrapped and burned for the custom of “fer cagar el tio”.

The region of present-day Portugal was inhabited by Neanderthals and then by Homo sapiens , who roamed the border-less region of the northern Iberian peninsula. Neolithic Portugal experimented with domestication of herding animals, the raising of some cereal crops and fluvial or marine fishing. Modern archeology and research shows a Portuguese root to the Celts in Portugal and elsewhere.

University of Huddersfield NEW research has uncovered massive differences in children’s social care between the four countries of the UK, with Northern Ireland emerging as the territory where young people are much less likely to be fostered or taken into residential care. This is despite the fact that the province has the UK’s biggest percentage of children living in deprived areas. Now the researchers – headed by a University of Huddersfield professor – are investigating the reasons for Northern Ireland’s lower rates and the lessons that can be learned.
Policy makers should be profoundly interested in the findings, states Paul Bywaters in a new online article. Latest outputs from the project include a co-authored article titled Child welfare inequalities in the four nations of the UK that appears in the Journal of Social Work. Professor Bywater has also written Country matters: The article, includes statistics which show that in Northern Ireland, 48 children out of every 10, living in the most deprived areas are looked after in foster or residential care.
The equivalent figures for England, Wales and Scotland are , and respectively. Figures also indicate that children in Northern Ireland are more likely to be on the child protection register – meaning they stay with their families – than to be looked after away from their homes. It is clear that within each country family economic circumstances and ethnicity are the most significant factors, but between the four UK countries other factors must be at work,” writes Professor Bywaters.
Children’s social care – variations Professor Bywaters analyses different legal and social care systems around the UK – including Scotland’s Children’s Hearing system – but adds that “there may be something different about the strengths of families and communities in the four countries, with local solidarity and resistance to state involvement in family life perhaps greatest in Northern Ireland.
